ABSTRACT: This article investigates the emergence of the voter registration card in Brazil through an 1882 specimen issued in the province of Ceará and recently incorporated into the collection of the Electoral Justice Memory Center in the state. Drawing on a transdisciplinary approach that integrates Sociology, Political Science, History, and Museology, the study examines the political, social, and legal context of a waning Second Reign, marked by structural transformations such as the advance of republicanism, the abolition of slavery, and high-impact electoral reforms. The research combines the analysis of primary sources with theoretical reflections on citizenship, democracy, and power, exploring tensions between elites and the broader population within a political system shaped by restricted suffrage and social exclusion. The article discusses how (and whether) the electoral design influenced political processes and affected the system’s legitimacy. By situating the document (and the discourse embedded in it) within the historical setting of its production, the study aims to contribute to debates on the challenges of democratic construction in Brazil. In addition, it underscores the importance of preserving historical records to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and to expand possibilities for critical analysis of the development of political and social institutions in a Republic that would soon be proclaimed.
